No. 67

Rating: Eggs Royal

London brunch review - No. 67. Ahhhhh, it is the first weekend which actually gives you hope that there exists something else than grey clouds, cold and drizzle. The blue sky turns London into that one city you have to love or leave. This kind of weather always makes me want to have a look outside the box a.k.a. the usual hanging-out spots and try something new. So, I climb on the Overground and make my way down to Peckham. An earlier attempt a year ago to visit the South London Gallery and No. 67 café had been unsuccessful due to problems with a gas pipe. This pleasant day though the odds seem to be on my side.

I have a quick look inside where a counter full of sweet delights catches your eye. Especially sitting in the back with a larger group can almost give you the impression of private dining or brunching and every seat is packed. Have I mentioned that the sun is shining? Yes? Well, that is exactly the reason why I and my book take a seat outside. Sunglasses on and jacket off – yes, this is exactly what makes me smile :)

And you know what else? A Bloody Mary for £5,00. Hell, yes, bring it on! It is not only cheap, but also very spicy what clears your head immediately if you had one or two drinks too much the night before.

Since I can’t decide what I should eat I just order both dishes: the “Baked egg with tomato & pepper stew, grilled sourdough” is full of flavour. I honestly thought about coming back here and just ask for bread. I’m not even kidding – good bread is not easy to find in London! It would be an option to add slow cooked pork to the stew, but since I order a second dish anyway I go with the vegetarian version. The dish contains big pieces of pepper and tomato and you kind of start thinking you are actually eating something healthy ;)

Dish no. 2 is “House cured trout with poached eggs, hollandaise sauce & spinach on a muffin” tastes delicious for itself and I like that No. 67 is replacing the salmon which you can find on every menu for the trout. Everything else reminds you of Eggs Royal – and I know this is maybe just me now – but since you have such good sourdough, pleeeeeaaaaaseeeee think of replacing the muffin with it. Mmmmhhh, I can already smell and taste it!

During my whole stay the service is kind and attentive and spying on other tables enlivens my fantasy of what to order when I come back here. It is definitely worth the journey – a bit of culture in the South London Gallery, exploring a new neighbourhood and the best brunch I have had in 2014 so far. The weather will be good this weekend – so, grab your Oyster card and a book or friends and dig into the gastronomical treat at No. 67! Simply, go for brunch, London!
