Ben's Canteen

Rating: Eggs Benedict

London brunch review - Ben's Canteen. It’s January. Everyone is talking about THE blues. So, you either join in or you completely ignore it… what might make you look like a completely crazy person. In London at least. It’s a bit like complaining about the weather. It’s either too hot or too cold, but never right. So, why on earth is it necessary to force yourself to NOT have fun for a whole month?

Since I’m stuck in London for all of January for the first time in 6 years I decide to make the most out of it – this means brunch as it is the last month my stomach can cope with that amount of food! To make myself feel a bit better I also do add a lot of gym time to the itinerary. Cheeky, I know ;)

On this cloudy Saturday I head down south of the river. A ten-minute-walk from Clapham Junction towards Battersea a little brunch oasis can be found – Ben’s Canteen. From the first moment onwards it gives you the feeling of a comfy neighbourhood café where laughter, clanking dishes and the buzzing noise of the coffee machine create an environment of a wanted hang-out place.

And here is a secret to improve your brunch experience even more: post a picture of your visit on Instagram with #benscanteenmenu , show it to your waiter and tatatata – magic, you get a Bloody Mary for free. How awesome is that??? You can even choose between different types of spirits and how spicy you like it. Therefore it is a bit disappointing that I receive a very tasty hair-of-the-dog, but the decoration is missing L It could have been perfect… but, lesson learnt, nothing in life is…

I am placed at the bar which I quite like because I can oversee the whole restaurant and also spy on other people’s food. The only downside – wet glasses and a constantly dirty counter to look at during you are eating. If this could be kept a bit tidier I actually do think this could be a favoured spot.

My heart starts beating faster when I read through the egg section of the menu. I have to admit that the sandwiches, burgers and toast do sound alluring, but what would brunch be like without any eggs? Since I can’t decide on any style I try a new version: “Eggs Costa Brava”. As a huge fan of Spanish food this addition of chorizo makes my day. Just to make sure I’m not missing out on anything I order smoked salmon (very tasty and high quality!) and mushrooms on the side. Ahhh, heaven! If I’m honest I also wanted to add the “Smashed Avocado”, but since I had seen the waiter’s face expressing incredulity I rather come back for it another time. The cakes displayed on the counter might also be worth a try...

Are you feeling hungry now? Excellent – it’s always brunch o’clock somewhere and Ben’s Canteen is definitely a tempting spot to spend it! Are you joining? If yes –go for brunch, London!
