The Lido Café

Rating: Eggs Florentine

London brunch review - The Lido Café. I’m on an art mission – I want to see David Hockney’s exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. And since my parents have always told me it is easier to study on a full stomach I want to combine my trip to South East London with a review. The very nice early spring weather invites to a stroll through the suburbs (Can I call Dulwich like that? It just feels it’s miiiiiles away.) and so I have a look on the map what can be found and categorized in the column “To be worth brunching at”.

I decide to go on a train to Herne Hill and walk over to Brockwell Park where Brockwell Lido and therefore ‘The Lido Café’ is located. It’s lovely to see the pool and the blue sky with its big white clouds… my thoughts are drifting off to a hot summer day, where nothing else can make you happier than taking a deep breath and jumping in a pool as such to then coming back up and feeling all refreshed. Well, this can only be beaten by someone then handing you over a drink straight away :)

There is also another reason why ‘The Lido Café’ attracts my attention: it’s called the “Prosecco Breakfast” which consists of either scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on toast or eggs royale with a glass of Prosecco. Yes, I’m in! The rest of the brunch menu contains the typical dishes like a Full English, also as a vegetarian dish available, pancakes, baps and porridge. Of course I order the Prosecco delight with scrambled eggs and mushrooms on the side.

Unfortunately the service is not at its best this Saturday, so the waiting time is quite long and my dish arrives without the smoked salmon first. This problem is solved quickly though and after my Prosecco is finished I feel like I could have a Bloody Mary which is first mistaken for a cappuccino, but when it finally arrives it keeps all the promises I was waiting for.

The food is good, it doesn’t reach the likes of some other London brunch spots though, but when I look outside through the windows I realize that this wouldn’t matter on a summer day when your toes can almost reach the water from where you are sitting.

With a full stomach and a good mood (I’m wondering if this is coming from the two drinks on an empty stomach before noon) I wander off to Dulwich and enjoy an afternoon of British contemporary art. Do you feel like Prosecco at the poolside this weekend? Then

go for brunch, London!
